 Krishnam vande jagadgurum !”

Hi all,

I am here with this post as Krishna Janmashtami is tomorrow.Just felt like writing something about this supreme soul.:-). I wish all of you a very Happy Krishna Janmashtami.

When I think of Krishna suddenly, either of the  two images come to my mind, one is the infant Krishna eating butter or the young Krishna playing flute. As I have heard so many stories from our elders about the little Krishna and his pranks ,I always wonder how Mother Yashodha used to manage him !! 🙂

Krishna is the most commonly worshipped hindu diety .Krishna has various names like Govinda, Mukunda, Madhusudhana,Madhava ,Pradyumna ,Vaasudeva,Muralidhara etc.Krishna is always  portrayed as an infant eating butter, a young boy playing a flute ,a young man along with Radha, a young man surrounded by women (gopikas)or as an elder giving direction and guidance.
The stories of Krishna appear across a broad spectrum of Hindu philosophical and theological traditions. They portray him in various perspectives like a god-child, a prankster, a model lover, a divine hero, and the Supreme Being. He is also called Krishna ,the love god.

The name originates from the Sanskrit word Kṛṣṇa, which means “black”, “dark” or “dark blue”.Some people also translate” Krishna ” as “attractive”.That is why Krishna also called Manohara(Manam harati yaha saha) which means the one who steals your mind/heart (by his beauty).
Lord Krishna is usually depicted playing a flute.

Krishna was the eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva. But his foster parents were Nanda and Yashodha of Gokul.Krishna is an avatar of lord Vishnu.Krishna was born on eighth day(ashtami) of krishna paksha in shravana masa.Hindus celebrate Krishna Janmashtami by fasting, worshipping Krishna and staying up until midnight, and offer prayers . Images of infant Krishna(ambegalu krishna, balakrishna) are placed in swings and cradles in temples and homes. At midnight, devotees gather around for devotional songs, dance . Some temples also conduct reciatation of Bhagavad Gita.People prepare a variety of snacks to offer to the Lord Krishna on this day.

The images below are variety of beautiful  brass Krishna idols, each one is unique in it’s design.I own some of these idols and wish to own still more as I just love them. 🙂

The idols below have such an intricate work.

Balakrishna or infant Krishna images:

” Kararavindena padarvindam

 Mukharavinde viniveshayantam

 Vatasya patrasya pute shayanam

 balam Mukundam manasa smaraami  ”

I remember  the infant Mukunda(krishna’s another name) who is sleeping on a Banyan leaf putting his Lotus(we can say as delicate as a lotus) toe(padaravinda) in to his lotus mouth(mukharavinda) with his Lotus hands(kararavinda).
